Delta Ag Expo offers growers reliable tips
MISSISSIPPI STATE -- Many of Mississippi's row-crop farmers depend on the information gathered at the annual Delta Ag Expo in Cleveland to help them make farming decisions for the upcoming season.
This year's two-day agricultural exposition and educational event will be Jan. 20 and 21 at the Bolivar County Exposition Center. Admission is free, and the doors open daily at 8:30 a.m.
The record-breaking yields for many crops this past year were the result of a combination of good management, ideal weather conditions and the latest in agricultural technology including high-yielding transgenic seed, precision farming guided by global positioning systems, efficient pesticides and timely irrigation practices. As plans are made for the 2004 production year, growers will continue to search for and apply products and techniques to push yields even higher.
"The Expo started more than three decades ago as a way for farmers to preview the newest equipment, products and management practices," said Jim Thomas, an agricultural engineer with Mississippi State University's Extension Service and a co-chairman of the event. "The Expo offers growers an opportunity to visit with their commercial suppliers such as seed and chemical representatives and equipment dealers and also to hear accurate and timely production and management information."
More than 100 exhibits will be set up and educational seminars will begin at 9 a.m. both days. The seminars will address current production advances and concerns for the Delta's major crops. The Wednesday morning session will highlight multiple aspects of wildlife management for recreational and revenue-producing goals.
The event is cosponsored by the Delta Agricultural Exposition Corporation and the MSU Extension Service. Seminar presenters will represent educational agencies including MSU's Extension Service, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station, the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce, Delta Wildlife and the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks.
