State ag econ group holds annual meeting
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State University agricultural economists are hosting an Oct. 27-28 sustainable agriculture conference that integrates environmental health, economic profitability and consumer demand for efficient, long-term use of resources.
The Mississippi Agricultural Economics Association is holding its 42nd annual meeting at MSU to discuss sustainability in agriculture.
“In simple terms, sustainable agriculture is the production of food, fiber, or other plant or animal products using farming methods that safeguard the environment, public health and animal welfare,” said Keith Coble, head of the MSU Department of Agricultural Economics. “The speakers at this meeting are uniquely situated to present future scenarios for agriculture in Mississippi and the United States.”
Among the speakers are three experts nationally known in their fields. Emily Johannes leads the ResourceMax service at K·Coe Isom, where she assesses sustainability attributes such as soil conservation, animal care, and water and energy use, and she advises producers on using these metrics to their advantage.
Bruce Knight, a former U.S. Department of Agriculture undersecretary and principal and founder of Strategic Conservation Solutions, LLC, will discuss conservation, agriculture and the environment.
Shane Hand, an MSU graduate, is director of marketing for Bayer’s Digital Farming Initiatives. He will address his company’s vision of the future of agriculture and how sustainability will be a part of that future.
The Mississippi Agricultural Economics Association serves as a resource for the citizens of Mississippi to benefit from the expertise of economists as they examine relevant and timely issues. It also connects alumni and clientele to current faculty and students in the MSU Department of Agriculture Economics.
