Field day focuses on square-foot gardening
OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. -- An upcoming workshop will offer training for people who want to turn their piece of land into an edible landscape, no matter the size.
The Alliance of Sustainable Farms will host its monthly workshop Nov. 8 at Galloway Family Farm in Ocean Springs.
Topics will include growing an edible landscape and square-foot gardening.
Galloway Family Farm has been in operation for more than 50 years, growing crops usually only seen on the Gulf Coast in Mississippi, including pawpaws, Japanese plums, bananas and kiwis.
“As the name implies, they are primarily an education and training family farm, where they grow their own food and teach self-sustainability to others,” said Alliance Manager Keith Benson.
There is no cost to attend the field day. Lunch is included, but preregistration is required. Onsite check-in begins at 10 a.m. The program begins at 10:30 a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m. To register for the field day, email [email protected].
Galloway Family Farm is located at 13407 Solomon Road in Ocean Springs.
Alliance field day partners and sponsors include the Mississippi State University Extension Service, Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station, Alcorn State University Extension Program, University of Mississippi Transactional Law Clinic, National Center for Appropriate Technology, Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce, and Mississippi Department of Education.
